Nearly 240,000 people signed a petition started by 69-year-old retiree Pat McCarthy this summer, calling on the British multinational grocer to stop the rollout of self-checkout machines and bring staff back. If reaction to Tesco ’s plans to replace staff tills with more self-checkout is any indication, some are vehemently opposed to it. ![]() “But the technology is getting cheaper and more accurate and people are starting to be more comfortable with being watched.”Īnother challenge is that there are still consumers who aren’t keen on a cashier-less future. “Obviously a store of 50,000 to 100,000 square feet with 80,000 SKUs is a different story than into a small footprint format,” he explains. There’s no doubt that cost is still a factor preventing widespread adoption of these technologies, especially when it comes to computer vision, says Weintraub. “The checkout process is the highest friction pain point in the shopping experience, especially in food, but we’re going to see more and more technologies that address that,” he says, noting that grocery retailers are increasingly experimenting with cashier-less store formats, similar to the one Amazon pioneered with its Amazon Go model in 2018. Weintraub says another key factor contributing to the increasing adoption of self-checkouts is the variety of technology options emerging, from traditional, scan it yourself versions to A.I.-driven, computer vision options that do the scanning for you (see more on these technologies below). Supporters of self-checkout also contend that existing staff can be better used to provide direct assistance as needed and avoid repetitive tasks that can be automated. The 2022 Global Self-Checkout Systems Industry report notes that the global market for self-checkout systems is expected to grow 11.9% year over year to 2026. Grocers know long lines and poor service that deter customers from shopping, will inevitably feed through to their bottom lines self-checkouts can help. Retailers are also feeling the heat with current labour shortages in the sector. “Along comes the pandemic and people don’t want to linger in stores anymore, they don’t want to talk to people and so self-checkouts get a very big turbo boost,” says Marty Weintraub, partner, national retail leader at Deloitte Canada. While the pandemic was destructive on so many fronts, industry experts agree it was a catalyst in accelerating the adoption of self-checkouts. “We’re finally seeing retailers adopting the right technologies to make the exit experience flawless for consumers.” Factors driving self-checkout “I think before COVID-19 it was seen as more of an experiment, but the commitment is quite clear now,” says Charlebois. Moreover, 85% of respondents said they were satisfied with their experience and 47% said they’d be willing to visit a cashier-less grocery store in the future. He points to a 2021 survey conducted by Dalhousie in partnership with Caddle (the largest daily active survey panel in the Canadian market), showing that 75% of Canadians have used self-checkouts while visiting the grocery store at least once in the past six months. ![]() “More and more, technology is making the self-checkout experience flawless – I can’t remember the last time I had problems using these systems, compared to years ago,” says Sylvain Charlebois, senior director of the Agri-Food Analytics Lab at Dalhousie University in Halifax. In the meantime, major retailers like Kroger and Walmart are piloting self-serve checkout-only stores in locations throughout the United States and Canada. But now, for the first time, a significant number of shoppers are actively seeking a frictionless shopping experience that self-checkouts can finally accommodate.Īccording to the latest data from The Food Industry Association (FMI), 29% of transactions at food retailers were processed through self-checkout in 2020, up from 23% the year prior. For years, grocers have been looking to self-checkout stations as a way to reduce labour costs, often directing reluctant consumers this way in spite of issues with not-so-intuitive technology. One shot keto where to buy9/3/2023 ![]() Through our $6MM contract with the United States Department of Defense Special Operations Command (US DOD SOCOM), we found that Ketone Diols are ideal for physically and cognitively demanding tasks, unlike HVMN Ketone V1, which was a Ketone Ester.Ketone esters can be up to three times more expensive per gram of ketone compared to Ketone Diol (discussed next). Some people vomit immediately after taking Ketone Monoester, according to its GRAS document. Ketone esters have a bitter, unpleasant taste and can cause nausea, vomiting, and digestive issues.Ketone levels in this range can cause digestive issues, increased blood acidity, and performance problems.Ketone esters quickly raise ketone levels, causing a spike that can reach 3-5mM in 30 minutes.Ketone esters may not be fully bioavailable if ester chains don't fully break down.Ketone esters can be one ester chain long (a "monoester"), two ester chains long (a "diester"), and so on.These molecules chain together BHBs, BHB precursors, and other keto-related molecules like MCTs.Ketone salts are often a blend of D-BHB and L-BHB (an inactive form of the molecule), so you’re only getting half the potential benefits. It's rare to see ketone levels above 0.5mM, and they don't last very long. The D-BHB is quickly released into your bloodstream, which can cause a small spike followed by a crash.Due to their high salt content, ketone salts can cause digestive issues when taken in large doses. These molecules combine D-BHB with a salt such as sodium, magnesium, or calcium. For a safer way to get BHB or BHB precursors, try the other ketone supplements listed below. It's available as a supplement, but it's very acidic and can be hard to handle in large doses. This is the primary ketone that our body naturally produces and uses for energy. ![]() Here’s a summary, ranked from least effective to most effective: These supplements quickly deliver ketones to your bloodstream, putting you into ketosis within minutes without the need to fast, restrict calories or carbs, or exercise away your glycogen stores.Ĭlick here to learn how to measure your blood ketone levels. Letterspace vs hairspace9/3/2023 ![]() Germany stipulates official requirements for typefaces for children who are just beginning to read and write, to have letterforms that facilitate the learning process. ![]() When developing a typeface for first readers, type designers need to consider many specific aspects. We’d like to think the decision was primarily emotional, and it was the actual design of the typeface that won over the client. Because we were going up against formidable competition, we were elated when the project was awarded to us in autumn 2019. With digital media in mind, we made sure our design had a significantly lower contrast to achieve better rendering and legibility on-screen, even in small type sizes.Īrmed with the two typeface proposals and a thorough analysis of the shortcomings of Cornelsen Verlag’s current typography and suggestions for areas of improvement, we presented our pitch to the company’s representatives. We also decided against teardrop-shaped terminals to achieve an original, contemporary look. Drawing characters that are more open and increasing the spacing worked wonders. We applied a similar approach as for CV Dida Sans when designing the new typeface. The new CV Dida Serif is an improvement on Century Schoolbook, for example, which also has been used in Cornelsen Verlag publications. These properties lend the typeface a lively and friendly air, and they also ensure that it performs equally well in print and on the screen.Ī serif face, also called Antiqua, lends itself better for immersive reading, particularly long texts for adult education or high school. The relatively low x-height emphasises the difference between the lowercase letters and the capitals, which received classical proportions. Compared to FF Schulbuch, as mentioned earlier, CV Dida’s character shapes are more open, and the spacing is somewhat looser. Instead of going for a radical shake-up, we opted for a gradual and organic improvement. In addition, we wanted the typeface to lend Cornelsen Verlag’s brand values a typographic identity. It had to accommodate a wide range of topics and a variety of users, from German to mathematics, from elementary to vocational and adult education. ![]() We aimed for a design that would perform admirably in print and on-screen with our sketch for the sans serif. Viktor Nübel designed CV Dida Serif while Botio Nikoltchev took care of CV Dida Sans. To allow us to proceed swiftly, we divided the workload. This insight made us decide to develop a coherent system consisting of two type families: a sans serif and a serif. It was also going to be used in materials for high school graduates or adult education, where letterforms take a back seat and the content becomes the main focus. The typeface not only needed to help novice readers learn the individual letters. The range of applications was considerable. Besides the aesthetic aspect, there were many advantages to commissioning a custom typeface: it would considerably cut down on licensing costs, clean up the typographic palette, allow for having fonts with character sets tailored to the specific needs of the publisher and its products, and strengthen the brand by having consistent typography throughout the different media.Īfter processing the information outlined in the brief, we realised that a single typeface could not meet the project’s demands and scope. Examining FF Schulbuch Nord, which is used for many of their first readers’ books, showed that its closed letterforms and narrow spacing are not suitable for children just learning to read and write. A thorough analysis revealed the flaws in the fonts used so far. It included an overview of the many typefaces currently used by Cornelsen Verlag, some of which had been designed specifically for the publisher. ![]() The original brief stipulated which kind of typeface was needed and for which publications.
